Cultivate the Virtue of Generosity.

Generosity Pledge

This final talk from Church Embodied explores the ancient practice of giving.

The top competitor for our devotion to Jesus is money (Matthew 6:24). Giving allows us to demonstrate that the way of Jesus and fidelity to God is more important to us than material things.

We think Christians should be the most generous people (2 Corinthians 9:6) on planet earth to support worthy causes, and there is no organization with more potential to change the world than the local church (Ephesians 3:10)! This world-changing group, called a church, is a community project--finances and all. And of course, all donations are tax deductible.

What is Generosity?

Generosity is the premeditated, calculated, designated relinquishing of personal financial resources for God's purposes in the local church and the world.

  • Premeditated: Generous people decide in advance that they are going to be givers.
  • Calculated: It isn’t the “amount that counts.” It’s the percentage we should consider counting insofar that calculated giving invites us to offer up a thoughtful portion of what we make—no matter our income level. Think here of the story of the generous woman in the Gospels. Jesus praises her for giving a tiny amount, but what amounted to a large percentage of what she had.
  • Designated Relinquishing: It is built into your monthly budget, with a strategy for giving it to God’s purposes through God’s church family.

Generosity Through Tithing in the Scriptures

  • Generosity in Scripture is not about God rewarding us, but about us sacrificing for God’s vision of reality. Sacrifice cultivates Christlike character. The blessing in tithing is in the sacrifice, not the rewards.
  • Tithing in the Hebrew Scriptures is part of the Law. In Christ, the Law has moved inward. Generosity is a virtue before it is an obligation.
  • The New Testament, in moving the Torah inward, also makes the Law’s demands harder. Eye-for-eye becomes “love your enemies” etc. Tithing follows the same trajectory. The idea of the first 10 percent is never overturned but is now costlier through the inward virtue of being generous. Therefore, 10 percent still serves as a guideline but isn’t the rule. Generosity pushes us to start somewhere, but progressively challenge ourselves to increase the percent we give away over time.
  • Bottom Line: Giving in the New Testament is based on cultivating virtue, and is in continuity with and informed by the Hebrew tradition of tithing. Therefore, tithing to your local church family should be both cheerful and sacrificial, driven by the inward virtue of generosity (see: 2 Cor. 9.7).

Giving Pledge Discernment Process

The following process (5-10 mins) of discerning a recurring pledge is intended primarily for those who call Pangea their home church. If Pangea is home, we hope that you join in the financial work of being The Generous Community we long to be. If you are giving and Pangea is not your church home, we are truly grateful as well.

  1. Decide that giving to the church is a priority. (Premeditated)
  2. Discern a starting percentage to give to the church each month. (Calculated)
  3. Deliberately build your budget around the amount you calculate, and set up a recurring method for donating [we HIGHLY recommend setting up Tithe.ly to make an auto-tithe on either the 1st or 15th of each month]. (Designated Relinquishing)
  4. Discover that this ongoing pattern has the potential to cultivate Christlike generosity and financial freedom.

The following form is designed to help you walk through the process of committing to cultivate generosity through giving to your local church family. YOU are "The Generous Community."

And any gifts given between our Pledge Sunday and the end of the year, will model our church's generous spirit as well. Ten percent of what comes in from The Generous Community will be gifted to Orphan Relief and Rescue to partner with them in fighting child trafficking!

*A quick note: The form below is not intended to guilt anyone into giving. It is designed solely for the purpose of intentional discernment. So often we make financial decisions, especially in areas of giving, that are spur of the moment—often driven by emotion rather than a plan. Maturing in the character of generosity is an invitation to be calculated and to deliberately build each month's budget around what you can give. Thanks for helping us to plan around your giving pledge and for taking the time to grow generously!

It isn't the amount that counts. It’s the percentage we should consider counting insofar that calculated giving invites us to offer up a thoughtful portion of what we make—no matter our income level. In other words, whether our income goes up or down, can we remain generous with the same portion of our resources? The hope is, that in many circumstances, the answer is "yes," while giving ourselves grace in hard situations that may arise. Generosity happens when giving happens intentionally—not by accident. The Hebrew Scriptures instructed 10% should be given to the community of faith. The New Testament never denies this, but invites Jesus-followers to internalize generosity as a virtue of self-sacrifice. Therefore, 10 percent is a helpful guideline for Christians but not the rule. Ultimately, we invite you to pick a starting percentage and move toward or beyond 10 percent over time.
If we are going to be generous, we need a plan. We highly encourage regular attenders to "Automate the Important" by making giving recurring. Choose the method you plan to implement.
Which day of the month will your gift be given?
What amount, based on your average monthly income and the percentage you've committed, will you invest into your local church family and our vision to be "a church that follows in the way of Jesus, to inspire others in the way of love"?
Now that you have walked this process through, we ask that you consider automating your gift in an intentional way. Each time your payment processes, on the day of the month you designate, you will receive a thank you letter in your email box with a tax deductible receipt. Thanks for being The Generous Community. Below this form, click the green button or here's the direct link to Tithe.ly: https://tithe.ly/give?c=2524
This is to leave specific feedback about your situation that may not be in the form above. Leave it blank if you have no special instructions for us, etc.
